UBL 2.0 Submitted as OASIS Standard
- The OASIS Universal Business Language (UBL) Technical Committee has submitted the UBL v2.0 specification set to be considered as an OASIS Standard. UBL defines a common XML library of business documents (purchase orders, invoices, etc.). Sun Microsystems, OSS Nokalva, Cognitran, and Booz Allen Hamilton have certified successful use of UBL 2.0. On 16 November, a Call For Vote will be issued to all OASIS member organizations. <full article>

- Ocean Scientists Embrace OGC Standards

"The work of OGC alliance partners is also important in addressing the interoperability needs of the ocean science community. The OASIS Common Alert Protocol (CAP) standard, for example, has elements that are harmonized with OGC standards, and CAP is growing in importance for issuing warning messages in emergency situations. It is being applied in some of the ocean science activities..." <full article>

- Common Alerting Protocol becomes ITU-T Recommendation

"The Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) v.1.1 developed by OASIS was the basis for the text that will be published as an ITU-T Recommendation following approval on 12 September. The original v1.1 specification was enlarged by a binary ASN.1 specification of the CAP messages that will enable the transport of CAP messages to VoIP terminals using H.323 among other systems. Experts say the use of ASN.1 significantly reduces the size of the message and therefore the potential for network congestion." <full article>

- Who needs binary XML when we have good compression?

"One approach to achieving XML compression is to adopt a format that is designed for binary formats from the start. The leading candidate is ISO/ITU ASN.1, a data transmission standard that predates XML. ASN.1 is being updated with several XML-related capabilities that allow XML formats to be reformulated into specialized forms such as ASN.1 Packed Encoding Rules, which define a very compact binary encoding. OASIS UBL is an example of an XML initiative that has taken the ASN.1 approach to XML data compression." <full article>

- Technology Leaders Meet to Advance Standards Efficiency - Global gathering to increase industry cooperation.

What: Invitation to attend Press Briefing followed by reception
When: Friday, 25 July, 18:00-19:00
Where: Holiday Inn Financial District, San Francisco
Why: Rare chance to meet key industry players under one roof

One of the world's foremost international Information and Communication Technology (ICT) standards making bodies, ITU, has convened a rare summit of ICT standards-makers in San Francisco, 24-25 July 2003 to discuss opportunities for industry-wide effort coordination. The Informal Forum Summit, the second of its kind, will be hosted by the Metro Ethernet Forum.

Standardization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) allows companies to benefit from economies of scale, expediting their entrance into new markets, while avoiding costs associated with non-standard and incompatible platforms. Standardization sets the stage for better choice and innovation, benefiting consumer, manufacturer and service provider. In a standardized environment manufacturers can streamline product development and launch new products with confidence. The German standards institute DIN estimates that standardization is worth more than $15 billion to the German economy alone. < full article >

- Thinking XML: Universal Business Language (UBL) - In many XML discussions, whenever XML's verbosity comes up and a binary serialization of XML is suggested, the wiser contingent always suggests mappings to ASN.1 for such cases. The UBL TC heeded this advice.< full article >
